SynopsisThe history of Bible translation within the Catholic Church is characterized by a rich tradition of rendering the Scriptures into the language of the faith community. This "comparative" New Testament is a great tool for Catholic use of the scriptures. It features eight complete translations of the New Testament -- all approved for use by Catholics -- which show the full range of expression for the central text of Christian study, worship, prayer, and contemplation., The Catholic Comparative New Testament features eight complete Catholic New Testaments, translated by dedicated scholars and gathered into a single convenient volume. This edition includes both "word-for-word" translations of the scripture as well as "thought-for-thought" translations. Readers can compare verses at a glance with facing-page translations (four translations per page) in a clear, easy-to-read typeface. The CCNT features four "word-for-word" translations - Douay-Rheims, Revised Standard Version Catholic Bible, New Revised Standard Version Catholic Bible, and the New American Bible. These translations follow as closely as possible the New Testament's original wording, making them perfect for close readings of the text. The Jerusalem Bible, the Good News Bible, the New Jerusalem Bible, and the Christian Community Bible represent the "thought-for-thought" school of Bible translation. These translations emphasize the intended meaning of the original vocabulary, adapting it to English syntax and grammar, making it easier to understand for the lay reader. The Catholic Comparative New Testament offers the most unique and informed way of reading scripture with its eight different translations. Beautifully printed on the highest quality material, the CCNT is an excellent study guide for the value., The history of Bible translation within the Catholic Church is characterized by a rich tradition of rendering the Scriptures into the language of the faith community. The CCNT features eight complete Catholic New Testaments that show the full range of expression for this central text of study, worship, prayer, and contemplation. A wide spectrum of people - including new and experienced Bible readers, homilists, and teachers - will gain from having this resource on their bookshelves. The Douay-Rheims, RSVCB, NRSVCB, and NAB are called formal equivalent translations (popularly referred to as "word-for-word" translations). This means that scholars rendered the New Testament's original language into English that is as close as possible to its original wording. The result is a translation that is particularly valuable for careful analysis of the text. Meanwhile, the JB, GNB, NJB, and Christian Community Bible represent the "thought-for-thought" school of Bible translation (technically described as dynamic or functional equivalent). This method places the priority on the intended meaning of the original vocabulary, adapting it to English syntax and grammar. Such a translation tends to be easier to read and understand. The texts are conveniently displayed on facing pages (four translations per page), with the same set of verses on each one. The order in which the translations appear on the pages demonstrates a progression in translation philosophy from formal to functional equivalency.

  • " Convenient with all major translantions including 4 "word for word" translations and 4 "thought for thought" tanslations

It is SO HELPFUL to have all the translation in a single volume. All 8 are shown on the 2 pages that face each other. I have most of the translations but this eliminates having to deal with 7 or 8 different tomes as I am reading and praying.
