Mesmerizing and wonderfully acted.
Excellent and disturbing. Very well acted. Derek Jacobi should have won an Emmy but I don't know that he did. The history is so dang depressing but you can't turn away; each episode is mesmerizing. I'd have given it 5 stars if it had been close captioned. This is television at it's best. So much better than the stuff served up to us today. I watched the "extra" of Charles Laughton in the role of Claudius. Awful! And Laughton's portrayal was terrible, even for 1937. Derek Jacobi will always own that role.

Outstanding, featuring superb acting, highly entertaining
One of the best productions ever to appear on PBS's Masterpiece Theater. This 4-disc series is based on the novels of Robert Graves, which were published in the 1930s, and tell the more intimate stories of the first four Roman emperors (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius). The series provides a history lesson at the same time. Highly recommended!

Great video set but needs close captioning
I watched this series years ago on PBS and really enjoyed it. Wanted to watch it again as it is also a great history source. My only complaint is that my hearing is not all that good these days and the Brit accents make this a bit hard to understand. Close captioning would have given this a 5 star rating.

History coming to life
well written, with an excellent cast - brings the history of early Rome and Caesar(s) to life. Watching ancient Rome which was the power of it's time and how it's decline came about - easily mirrors our current time! A must see!!

A story with it all
Excellent story. Well played. I do wish when they remastered it they would have fixed problems with volume. We still love the story. The acting is also wonderful. It feels like watching a stage play.

Like a book that can't be put down
The television series closely follows Roberts' well researched books I Claudius, and Claudius the God. The casting was perfect, and the costumes very well done. The story gives a fascinating look at events that occurred during the reigns of the first 4 Roman emperors.

I had had the old dvds and with this new series remastered it greatly improved everything about the storyline.

I Claudius is great!
The re-mastered discs are in good shape, bringing the overall production quality close to what we would expect from today's work. Of course, the story is wonderfully acted and in a sense, timeless.
