Reviews"Eugene Sledge became more than a legend with his memoir, With The Old Breed . He became a chronicler, a historian, a storyteller who turns the extremes of the war in the Pacific the terror, the camaraderie, the banal and the extraordinaryinto terms we mortals can grasp."Tom Hanks "In all the literature on the Second World War, there is not a more honest, realistic or moving memoir than Eugene Sledge's. This is the real deal, the real war: unvarnished, brutal, without a shred of sentimentality or false patriotism, a profound primer on what it actually was like to be in that war. It is a classic that will outlive all the armchair generals' safe accounts ofnot the "good war"but the worst war ever."Ken Burns, "Eugene Sledge became more than a legend with his memoir, With The Old Breed . SynopsisIn "The Wall Street Journal," Victor Davis Hanson named "With the Old Breed" one of the top five books on epic twentieth-century battles. Studs Terkel interviewed the author for his definitive oral history, "The Good War," Now E. B. Sledge's acclaimed first-person account of fighting at Peleliu and Okinawa returns to thrill, edify, and inspire a new generation. An Alabama boy steeped in American history and enamored of such heroes as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene B. Sledge became part of the war's famous 1st Marine Division-3d Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after intense training, he was shocked to be thrown into the battle of Peleliu, where "the world was a nightmare of flashes, explosions, and snapping bullets." By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with fear but no longer with panic. Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Testament, With the Old Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater. Here is what saved, threatened, and changed his life. Here, too, is the story of how he learned to hate and kill-and came to love-his fellow man., "Eugene Sledge became more than a legend with his memoir, With The Old Breed . • One of the best books on combat written.

The great thing about this book is that IT IS NOT an autopsy of the Pacific campaign, or a detailed analysis of each battle. This is one guys personal experience, from his perspective. It is what he lived, not why research has discovered 20 years later. This the experience of a young southern gentleman going into a “meat grinder” and coming out the other side. I would also recommend Sledge’s follow up book “China Marine.”

  • Quick reading and informative.

The book is very quick reading and very interesting having come directly from someone who was there to experience combat there with the Japanese. The author is a good story teller and very succinct. He doesn't hold anything back.

  • Compelling first hand witness to war, a travel back to a time not to be forgotten.

I just finished watching the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg production of The Pacific, a TV series based on this book and some other sources and I'm part way into reading this book now too. It's compelling and goes into far more detail about the men and women who served during WWII, and particularly the experiences of Eugene Sledge as he details in With The Old Breed. I knew I would enjoy it and I truly am. I've also purchased and read Unbroken, the life story of Louis Zamperini, another great book from the same era that everyone should read. Sometimes these stories are hard to absorb, but it's vital to know the truth and hardships of war and how important faith is to survival and hopefully to future choices of how to avoid this massive conflicts. I highly recommend reading these books. Thanks.

  • One of the most insightful accounts of combat I have ever read

An exceptionally honest and well written account, covering the author’s mindset and experiences from basic training, on through the hardship and horrors of combat on the islands of the South Pacific during World War Two.

  • With the old Breed.

This was a great book based on his recollection and time he fought in the Pacific during WW2. Show how different it was for those men fighting the Japanese compared to those fighting the Germans. Some of this was on the mini-series of Band of Brothers Pacific.

  • History, unaltered by political correctness

America still speaks English because of dedication such as written between the covers of this book. Makes one wonder why drafting females is even in the wind. The Old Breed protected them from even knowing of these events. Chivalry is not the only MIA today. Sacred Honor among those who gave and took with equal vigor. Some of us have enough experience to know what is written is real. We are wiser to know mankind has not completely changed. Sledge, living up to his name, hit the nail square on the head! Required reading for those voting on draft registration?

  • With the Old Breed

Histories such as this are even more powerful when describing the personal actions of the author. Adding to this mix is the event(s) described are themselves historically significant.

  • A top WWII story from the soldier's perspective. Brutally frank and well written.

Written from a soldier's perspective. You really feel like you've just been there. Drags one thru time like "Papillon". Well written and compelling. Can really appreciate WWII.

  • With Old Breed

I have not finished the book yet however what I have read is very well written. I have been wanting to read this book for quite awhile and I am glad that I am finally reading it. If you have any interest in the Pacific Campaign from WWII this is a great read.

  • A written brother to "Saving Private Ryan", but even grittier.

Very well written first-person account that allows us to approach an understanding of just how horrific the combat experience was, I think particularly in the pacific front lines. Every man there, and equally in the North African/European theater, was a bona fide HERO for simply not turning around and running like hell.
