This romantic epic takes a bittersweet look at Robin Hood and Maid Marian in their later years. After King Richard's death in the Holy Land, Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and his trusty companion Little John finally return home to England. Despite his two-decade absence, Robin immediately determines to find his long-lost love, Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn). He discovers her in a convent, where she retired after waiting fruitlessly for him to return from the Crusades. Now she is comfortably settled there as the Mother Superior, and does not fully welcome Robin's return. Great cast in a legendary tale.
This movie gives us two of the most admired actors in the history of the American cinema in a memorable performance. In the case of Audrey Hepburn, it is a performance that makes us both happy to see her again and sad in the knowledge that she will soon be no longer among us. In the case of Robert Shaw, we are once again treated to one of the screen's best character actors, a man who has graced roles ranging from the old sea salt in "Jaws" to the German tank commander in "Battle of the Bulge." If you love the Robin Hood legend and if you love Audrey Hepburn, buy this movie.
This movie presents a wonderful ending to the Robin Hood Story, and Audrey Hepburn is perfect in the role of the aging Marian. A Battle of Good vs Evil.....and of course Love.
