Friedkin Classic finally on Bluray
When I purchased this item I noticed that the rating listed with the film was "G", which made me laugh. This is a gritty, dark film that starts with the lives of 4 men forced to flee their lifestyles and go into hiding in a poor, South American village. All are living in extreme poverty when an unexpected explosion in a nearby oil well gives them a second chance for a new life. The problem is that the oil well fire can only be extinguished by an explosive blast of nitro-glycerin, and the only available product has not been properly stored, making it very unstable. The lightest jar could cause an explosion that would level a city block. Offered a big paycheck if they deliver the 4 men are picked to drive 2 trucks 200 miles through thick, muddy jungle roads. The stage is set for an unforgettable journey through beautiful and deadly jungles. Roy Schieder is the American star (featured in "Jaws" as Chief Brody) but the other cast members are stars in their own rite, including Bruno Cremer (a Frenchman hiding from a scandal back home), Francisco Rabal, (a hitman on the run) and Amidou, a Palestinian bomber wanted by Israelis. Shot before CGI was invented the staging and action is amazing, including the crossing over a decrepit rope bridge in the middle of a rainstorm. The cost of the movie and its poor box office return almost destroyed the career of William Friedkin, especially since it was released the same weekend as "Star Wars".
