SynopsisLizzie and Karl's mother is a zoo keeper; the family has become attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene, who will be destroyed as a precautionary measure so she and the other animals don't run wild should the zoo be hit by bombs. The family persuades the zoo director to let Marlene stay in their garden instead. When the city is bombed, the family flees with thousands of others, but how can they walk the same route when they have an elephant in tow, and keep themselves safe? Along the way, they meet Peter, a Canadian navigator who risks his own capture to save the family. As Michael Morpurgo writes in an author's note, An Elephant in the Garden is inspired by historical truths, and by his admiration for elephants, "the noblest and wisest and most sensitive of all creatures." Here is a story that brings together an unlikely group of survivors whose faith in kindness and love proves the best weapon of all.

  • An interesting "inspired" story that made me investigate the true story.

This was an interesting story of a WWII event that I had not heard of before. It is "inspired" by a true story and there is a lot of change from the true story of the saving of the elephant and other zoo animals, but it made a good story and compelled me to look up the real story and read about this zoo and the attempts to save all the animals possible during war time air raids, occupation, food shortages, etc. The author started the story in present day in a nursing home as the story of an elderly woman's past comes out as she shares her past with a younger mother and her young son. It is another example of compassion, resilience and the length people will go to to fight for what they believe in even under the most challenging and disheartening circumstances. Love and compassion for the elderly that are alone is also a big part in the telling of the story. The elderly still have their stories to tell if we take the time to reach out and listen. A lot of stories should still be told and retold so that they will not be forgotten.

  • A good read

Well written and based on a true story, and I found it interesting to have it written from the perspective of Germans during the war, as opposed to having it from the usual perspective of "us" as the allies.
