Richard Kraut's challenging and excellent book approaches Plato's early dialogues and theCritochief among them 'as chapters from [Socrates'] intellectual biography.' Informing these chapters, in Kraut's view, is a coherent Socratic political theory which gives subtle and surprisingly comprehensive replies to two questions: When is an individual morally bound to obey the state? And who should rule the state? -- James Dybikowski, The Philosophical Review, Richard Kraut's challenging and excellent book approaches Plato's early dialogues and the Crito chief among them 'as chapters from [Socrates'] intellectual biography.' Synopsis
Presents an outlook on Socrates' political philosophy in Plato's early dialogues. Focusing on the Crito, this work shows that Plato explains Socrates' acceptance of the death penalty as arising not from a philosophy that requires blind obedience to every legal command but from a highly balanced compromise between the state and the citizen., This fresh outlook on Socrates' political philosophy in Plato's early dialogues argues that it is both more subtle and less authoritarian than has been supposed. Focusing on the Crito , Richard Kraut shows that Plato explains Socrates' refusal to escape from jail and his acceptance of the death penalty as arising not from a philosophy that requires blind obedience to every legal command but from a highly balanced compromise between the state and the citizen. In addition, Professor Kraut contends that our contemporary notions of civil disobedience and generalization arguments are not present in this dialogue., This fresh outlook on Socrates' political philosophy in Plato's early dialogues argues that it is both more subtle and less authoritarian than has been supposed. The book was in exactly the condition described in the listing. I generally don’t buy books that only have one photo. It was shipped quickly. The book arrived via Amazon box truck and was in Amazon packaging, so I assume this seller also lists books on Amazon. I wish I had known this as I am trying to not shop Amazon. I just think other buyers might want to know this. Still, the book was packed with care in a bubble envelope. Shipping costs were reasonable, but there was no tracking available.

This item was reported mailed within 3 days of order. However, I did not receive it. I waited 4 days past expected delivery date before notifying seller. Seller reported that the item must have been list in the mail, and I received an apology and a refund the next day. Disappointed in but receiving the book, but I would definitely purchase from this seller again
