The governors of Florida, Texas, and North Carolina have all pledged that they will not spend taxpayer money subsidizing the liberal arts, and they seem to have an unlikely ally in President Obama. While at a General Electric plant in early 2014, Obama remarked, "I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree." These messages are hitting home: majors like English and history, once very popular and highly respected, are in steep decline.     Weak Book from Author I Like

    I was eager to read Zakaria' s latest book, both because as an English major I agree with the premise and because I read a previous book of his and liked it. The substance of this slim book of less than 200 pages could easily have been written as an article, which is how it must have started. My guess is his publisher talked him into expanding it to book length. What he seems to have done is to add "filler". And I wish his case had been better made because we are turning out technocrats, not the well rounded graduates which a democracy requires - that particular point he does make, albeit with an apology for millennials (again one that does not ring true). So sorry, can't recommend this one soon to be in the "bargain bin" at your local bookstore!
