Product Information

One of the most exciting and heart-wrenching epics ever made, THE SAND PEBBLES is a masterpiece of storytelling, with exceptional performances by a stellar cast. The complex tale begins simply enough in 1926 China, where a group of American soldiers are patrolling the Yangtze River on a gunboat called the San Pablo. The crew members, who call themselves Sand Pebbles, includes Jake Holman (Steve McQueen), a dispassionate but capable navy machinist, and his only friend, Frenchy (Richard Attenborough), a sailor in love with an English-educated Chinese girl, Maily (Marayat Andriane), who has been sold into prostitution. Strong feelings of nationalism have been sweeping through China, however, and when Chiang Kai-shek moves against the feudal warlords, the United States decides to treat the upheaval as a civil war, and the San Pablo is ordered to confine its function to protection of American civilians in the area. Included among them are Mr. Jameson (Larry Gates), a missionary, and Shirley Eckert (Candice Bergen), a schoolteacher with whom Jake falls in love. Soon Jake finds himself in the middle of an international military crisis when his native assistant, Po-han (Mako), is brutally tortured in an attempt to draw the San Pablo's fire, and the boat's inexperienced and prideful captain (Richard Crenna) wants to give his humiliated ship and disgraced crew a chance for glory. THE SAND PEBBLES--with its expert cinematography, moving score, and riveting locations--is a memorable viewing experience brought to life by the multitalented director Robert Wise.

    It took a few days for the item to be shipped but it still arrived earlier than the expected time. The seller took extra care to package the CD: sandwiched by bubble wrap and cardboard, which I am very grateful for as the case arrived without a single scratch or dent! The CD itself looks brand new! The booklet was also included and looks vibrant. I am very glad I purchased from this seller! A small price to pay for my growing Muse collection :)

    Wow! First of all CD was shipped fast. And condition is way better than advertised, this thing is darn close to brand new. Now I order a lot of CDs but the packaging on this one was incredible. On top of cardboard protection and padded envelope the seller put a piece of cloth between the bottom of the CD and the tray to prevent any scratches. I’m speechless. Need a better grade for this seller than A+. If I find anything else in their store I need I’m buying it here. Thank you!

    THE ROAD SHOW VERSION IS BOSS

    I don't usually write reviews but I have to say that I had received this DVD set of two discs well packaged and in a timely manner. As a retired MM1; the story reminds me of the past stationed in the far east and having been obligated to train some sailors of the Philippines. So I had to have this for my collection. Thanks!

    Magnificent war film with the memorable performance of Steve McQueen. The plot is very interesting and entertaining. Color image quality and definition is excellent, excellent. As good as a current HD. The option to other languages is an added value to this special DVD pack. The seller's attention was attentive, fast and efficient. I am satisfied with the purchase.

    Sand Pebbles (Steve McQueen) are "TOP SHELF"

    Steve McQueen, in my opinion, was the greatest actor of all time....In every movie he made...he is bound and determined to do what he believes what is right..despite the opposition...and you can't help rooting for him...The coolest cat ever.....This particular movie is filled with everything a good movie should have...Pulls at many emotions...Other actors provide excellent performances as well....Definitely one to have in the old dvd collection...5 STARS...

    Great Intro to an era of history rarely taught in schools.

    The Sand Pebbles is a classic about early 20th Century China. The story is epic and the cast of characters is full of famous folks. If you are interested in this era of history this movie is a great semi-historically correct intro.
