With violent shoot-outs and a turbulent chase scene reminiscent of Friedkin's own THE FRENCH CONNECTION, TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. broke with tradition by making the ostensible hero as morally reprehensible as the villain he pursues. Clashing with bureaucratic obstacles, Chance is forced to break the rules in order to procure cash for a sting operation, but the risks he takes snowball into an avalanche of violence and moral repercussions, leading to a morally ambiguous cul-de-sac from which there may be no return.

Tough, bleak and a killer watch - a must own
Friedkin doesn't miss. The guy who gave us The French Connection and Sorcerer makes glam LA look like frickin' Nam, man! Michael Mann saw this and said, "Well, I'll give it my own shot" and he did pretty great! But Friedkin's movies have a nihilistic edge that most directors won't go as far to copy. That makes them brutal to watch but also absolutely indelible. You don't forget Friedkin movies. The hardcore nature of TLADILA is no exception. The freeway chase, while unforgettable, is just one part of that scene. He creates movies that you'd never want to live in, but are fascinating to visit. As long as you can escape. An all-time classic with a MAJOR twist at the end. This is the first time most people saw William Peterson, Willem DaFoe and John Turturro. Also, one of the great car chase scenes in movie history, plus L.A. has a look in this film that is gritty, unforgiving--none of the cliched shots of L.A. landmarks. If you like dark, brooding movies like "Heat" where you can sense doom building, you'll love this.An all-time classic with a MAJOR twist at the end. Movie is outstanding...
The movie to Live and Die in LA is outstanding and even much better Friedken's French Connection but their are different quality blu rays and this blu ray version is no different than a DVD copy. However the movie is remarkable in all aspects. You won't be disappointed.

William L. Petersen is excellent as a cocky Secret Service agent, bent on destroying/arresting (at any price) Willem Defoe - 'Rick Masters' - who is a slick counterfeiter who's never been caught. William Friedkin does a first rate job of directing these talented actors, fairly early in their careers. Just possibly the best car chase ever filmed. Right up there with 'Ronin' and 'French Connection'. 72 stunt drivers participate in this awesome display of driving to escape - the LA police - finally resorting to driving the wrong way on a choked freeway to shake their tail. Astounding. A real 'nail biter'. Just when you think it can't get worse, it does. A real 'Wild West' show that mangles dozens of cars, including a 'jackknifing' diesel rig, clearly out of control, destroying ... William L.
