Product Information

CBS took a bold move when they staged FAIL SAFE live on network TV in April 2000. The story follows a pilot (played by George Clooney) who is about to drop nuclear missiles on Russia. Unfortunately Clooney's character is unaware that the entire mission has been ordered by mistake, leaving the American president (played by Richard Dreyfus) faced with some tough decisions. The program was based on a novel by Harvey Wheeler and Eugene Burdick and is directed by the acclaimed Stephen Frears (THE QUEEN). FAIL SAFE was originally adapted for the big screen in 1964 by Sidney Lumet.

The seller did refund the item and didn't even want me to send it back. Overall, it's a pleasing transaction since the seller was kind enough to go above and beyond to make it right. Just a shame it got damaged...

    Not a film you want to double task with.

    2000 isn't available on subscription sites, just pay streaming. We hadn't watched it in 25 years. During that period, I was a college adjunct US History professor and taught an HS Early College History of the Cold War class. I knew the story and had seen the old version multiple times, as well as assigning the book for review paper options. With all of that 2000 is still edge-of-your-seat drama. At times, it seems the cast will veer to caricatures, but they pull it together for the Deeply Troubling Finale. That this was performed live is quite remarkable. That the B58 Nuclear-Armed Bomber gets less than five seconds of film-screen time total is a testament to the power of the acting.

    Great Real Time Action

    A TV remake of the 60s film in real time (as if it were actually happening as we watch) rather than a dramatization. Similar to the way Orson Welles did his radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds.” A very commendable DVD. Sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, and entertained.

    Remake of the outstanding original film

    An excellent remake of an important film. George Clooney and Richard Dreyfuss are excellent, and it was nice to see the great Walter Cronkhite. I really miss Uncle Walter. I highly recommend this video.

    Excellent remake of a film we never should have had to made in 1964. Simply more countries are on the list at the end, able to wield nuclear weapons. WE HAVE FAILED, SO FAR...

    Its not the original!

    I thought this movie was the original “Failsafe” and was disapointed to find it wasn’t. I wanted that film I grew up with. I didn’t know there was a remake of the original. I did watch the remake and it was ok but lacked the impact of a classic and it wasn’t in B&W.
