Reviews"Jim Gindlesperger has taken the early studies of significant field hospitals in and around the Gettysburg battlefield, an often overlooked story of the farms and homes where so many worked so hard to save the wounded and the dying, and provided the reader with a more complete understanding of the complex story of the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg. " --John S. Heiser, Historian, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania "Jim Gindlesperger has built on Greg Coco's classic publication "A Vast Sea of Misery" concerning this fascinating subject. This new look at medical care during and after the Battle of Gettysburg is very comprehensive and will serve as a ready resource on this often overlooked chapter of the battle. An extensive listing of civilian hospital sites and farm division field hospitals is included. Maps locate hospital sites in detail. Information is presented throughout the book concerning both medical personnel and the civilians' role in the days and weeks during and after the conflict. This book is both an excellent reference and a valuable tool for further study on this topic. " --Richard D. Schroeder, M.D. FAAOS, Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon, Licensed Battlefield Guide #166-Gettysburg "Jim Gindlesperger's book, Bullets and Bandages , expands past works and adds another layer to the story of the soldiers who fought here, the families that were impacted, and their lives that would never be the same." --Francis P. Feyock, CRNA, MSL, Licensed Battlefield Guide #104- Gettysburg " Bullets & Bandages is a great resource to add to your Gettysburg library. Jim Gindlesperger's latest book highlights the important work of nursing the wounded in the weeks and months following the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition to detailing the trials of the soldiers who were wounded, this book also brings the often untold story of the civilian aid offered to those soldiers to light. Used as either a study guide or field guide, it is a must have for any Gettysburg aficionado. SynopsisAt Gettysburg, PA, during three days of July 1863, 160,000 men fought one of the most fierce and storied battles of the US Civil War. Nearly one in three of those men ended up a casualty of that battle, and when the two armies departed a few days later, 21,000 wounded remained. This book is the story of how those soldiers were cared for in a town of 2,500 people. Historian and author of several other guides to Gettysburg, James Gindlesperger provides a context for the medical and organizational constraints of the era and then provides details about the aid stations and field hospitals created in the aftermath of the battle. Filled with historical and contemporary photos, as well as stories about the soldiers and their healers, this book is a detailed guide for visitors to the site as well as others interested in American Civil War history., A guide to the aid stations and field hospitals that served casualties following the Battle of Gettysburg.

  • A good companion to Greg Coco's ''A Vast Sea of Misery''

Like Greg Coco's, ''A Vast Sea of Misery'', ''Bullets and Bandages'' is a great reference book though hardly something for casual reading or story telling. Both books are in a like format with maps dealing with small areas. The major difference is Coco's book shows period photos along with some current in B&W where James Gindlesperger's book provides current color photos. They compliment one another very well. Neither book however goes much beyond the Gettysburg area. Quite a few wounded were evacuated out by train to larger cities for care, Harrisburg, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, and even New York. To me this is a bit of a let down, but the books do a great job of covering the Gettysburg area. James Gindlesperger's book does a very good job of covering some of the human interest factor that Coco's book leaves out at times, seeing as Coco has a reputation of covering the human interest side of the battle. In short, a very well done book. You can't read it like a novel, it wasn't intended to be. It is however a very interesting guide and reference with more of the human touch added to be picked up and read/studied in a casual manner.
