Reviews
The best writing transports readers to another time and place, so that when they reluctantly close the book, they are astonished to find themselves returned to their everyday lives. One Thousand White Women is such a book. Jim Fergus so skillfully envelops us in the heart and mind of his main character, May Dodd, that we weep when she mourns, we shake our fist at anyone who tries to sway her course, and our hearts pound when she is in danger., Jim Fergus knows his country in a way that's evocative Dee Brown and all the other great writers of the American West and its native peoples. But One Thousand White Women is more than a chronicle of the Old West. It's a superb tale of sorrow, suspense, exultation, and triumph that leaves the reader waiting to turn the page and wonderfully wrung out at the end., "A most impressive novel that melds the physical world to the spiritual. One Thousand White Womenis engaging, entertaining, well-written, and well-told. Synopsis
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time., Based on an actual historical event but told through fictional diaries, this is the story of May Dodd--a remarkable woman who, in 1875, travels through the American West to marry the chief of the Cheyenne Nation. One Thousand White Women begins with May Dodd's journey into an unknown world. Having been committed to an insane asylum by her blue-blood family for the crime of loving a man beneath her station, May finds that her only hope for freedom and redemption is to participate in a secret government program whereby women from "civilized" society become the brides of Cheyenne warriors. What follows is a series of breathtaking adventures--May's brief, passionate romance with the gallant young army captain John Bourke; her marriage to the great chief Little Wolf; and her conflict of being caught between loving two men and living two completely different lives. "Fergus portrays the perceptions and emotions of women...with tremendous insight and sensitivity."-- Booklist "A superb tale of sorrow, suspense, exultation, and triumph." --Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump

Shipped super quickly and was wonderfully packaged! Quality is even better than I expected- I knew the description said it had the sprayed edges (making it a first print), but sometimes people say that and then send a different version. This buyer is legit- I got the sprayed edges version that I needed, and it came in excellent condition!

  • A Read Worth 1000 Words

The author proposes: What if the US Government had granted the Cheyenne request to trade 1000 ponies for 1000 white women, with whom they would produce offspring to be brought up in the ways of the White Man? Written in diary form, the lead character reveals her sordid past and her new adventure as the wife of a Cheyenne chief. She and the other white brides are to bring an end to Native American and US hostility through the children they bring into the world.

  • Worst Western i have ever tried to read.

The author rambles on and on about everything but doesn't tell us what we are curious about. Example, he tells us about all the different women on the train but doesn't say how she knows them. It's completely overworded.

  • One Thousand White Women

This is a compelling story of white women who went west to marry into a Cheyenne tribe. The writing is great--you can almost feel what these women are feeling. They were unusual, brave, and determined. The project did not turn out to be a success, but there was a great deal to be learned about love and life.

  • Captivating story

The book I received had a different cover than pictured. It said good condition, however pages were warped and discolored so It say more of a less than fair condition. Great story .
