Top Drawer Spy Thriller
MI-5 became one of the most popular and long lasting British TV series and with good reason. The stories are compelling and well written, and the makers took the time to develop the characters so that the viewer cared about them. An interesting aspect of the series was that the British agents remained suspicious of the American intelligence community and its motives. They felt that America did not take them seriously and considered Britain a second rate power in the world community. One criticism of the series is that many of the main characters were killed in the line of duty or lost from the series for a variety of reasons. So just as I warmed to a character and looked forward to seeing he or she in each episode, they were suddenly killed and quickly replaced. This happened so many times over ten seasons that it had to be planned by the show's creators. But Harry Pearce played by Peter Firth remains a constant as the head of the section. Ruth Evershead played by the delightful Nicola Walker, appears, disappears, and then returns to complete the series. Firth places Pearce in an understated manner, and his facial expressions say more about the character than his words. In conclusion, this was a first rate series in every way and has aged well over the past decade since it ended.
