  • Vamps Is a Killer New Comedy!

Vampires in Goth aesthetic that’s all in good fun. Amy Heckerling’s vampire romantic comedy Vamps (2012) is a delightful comeback for Heckerling as an innovative writer-director. Heckerling’s playful writing is a brilliantly sarcastic takedown of 2010’s pop culture that longs for the days of silent films, dance clubs, old music, and good times with your friends. Heckerling satirizes government surveillance and oversight with vampires fearing being discovered and located, all while spoofing vampire lore and lust for blood. Her words feel so alive for a movie about the undead. Amy Heckerling’s direction for Vamps is awesome with a Goth aesthetic in retro costumes, black eyeliner make-up, and old timey music. Vamps is so palatable at a juicy 93 minutes of bloodlust and sincere feelings thanks to Debra Chiate’s brisk editing and clever montages. Vamps feels like a Tim and Eric sketch turned into a full sitcom. Amy Heckerling is back in full comedic command of her cinematic witchcraft. Alicia Silverstone returns to form with a standout leading actress role as a vampiress named Goody. Her cute outfits, pleasant personality, nostalgia for the old classics, and endearing charisma make Goody a wonderful main character. I adore Alicia Silverstone as she’s an effortless talent, who has not aged a day since Heckerling’s 1995 comedy classic Clueless, which is a perfectly apt casting for a vampire. Silverstone lights up the screen with genuine feelings and silly jokes that entertained me throughout Vamps. Krysten Ritter is killer as the fun loving Goth girl Stacy, who is all about enjoying her new life as a vampire. Ritter is pretty as the pale heroine and hilarious with her nonchalant attitude and penchant for the latest technology and teenage abbreviations. Her platonic chemistry with Silverstone makes them the ideal immortal pair to take on late night Manhattan. Her romantic chemistry with the ever charming and quirky Dan Stevens is excellent too. He is a great love interest for Ritter’s eager Stacy as his character Joey is just as odd and as her. Sigourney Weaver looks like she had the time of her life playing the wicked vampire Cisserus. Richard Lewis is very likable and endearing as an old flame of Silverstone’s Goody named Danny. He plays the straight guy to their goofy Goth vampire antics quite well. Wallace Shawn is the perfect foil as his ridiculous depiction of Dr. Van Helsing is erratic and intense, yet constantly gets a laugh. Malcolm McDowell’s supporting role as Vlad the Impaler is really funny as he looks like he was just glad Heckerling asked him to act again. Zak Orth is a truly inspired idiot as Goody’s sycophant Renfield. Marilu Henner is stunning in her quick cameo as Danny’s restored wife Angela. Kristen Johnston gets a funny cameo as Mrs. Van Helsing. Gael Garcia Bernal cameos as a Spanish lover trope humorously entitled Diego Bardem in a funny blend of his dear friends and fellow actors Diego Luna and Javier Bardem. Larry Wilmore finally is funny on screen in his cameo as Professor Quincy. Todd Barry gets a short cameo as Sigourney Weaver’s toadie Ivan. Justin Kirk steals his scenes as the overly dramatic Ukrainian vampire Vadim. His strange walk, funny accent, and vamping acting as an incessantly sexualized and violent vampire. In conclusion, I hope more viewers give Vamps a view because Amy Heckerling’s witty writing and amusing direction makes Vamps a must watch modern comedy!
