Better than I Expected
I was prepared to hate this biography, so much has been said about it as a hatchet job, comparable with Albert Goldman’s bio on Lennon. Well there are a few mean spirited moments, and Joel is obviously into drama and seeing the dark side of things. But the bio was nowhere near as disparaging as I thought it would be. There are a lot of interesting facts and it’s clear he did a lot of research. He definite saw a Rick Nelson as a multi dimensional person. In fact, Joel is hardest on David Nelson, Literally depicting him as dumb. Clearly an angry response to David refusing to fully open up about his brother. I thought he was relatively accurate about Rick Nelson’s disastrous marriage and the general effect it had on the course of Nelson‘s life, which was a hard road. The author does not acknowledge that Nelson was on an upswing at the end of his life, generally good with his family and happy with new career opportunities. But that’s the drama queen in this author. A lot else is good writing and insightful.
