SynopsisO. Winston Link photographed the Norfolk and Western, the last major steam railroad in the United States, when it was converting its operations from steam to diesel in the 1950s. Link's N&W project captured the industry at a moment of transition, before the triumph of the automobile and the airplane that ended an era of passenger rail service. His work also revealed a small-town way of life that was about to experience seismic shifts and, in many cases, vanish completely. Including a collection of more than 180 of Link's most famous works and rare images that have never before been published, O. Winston Link: Life Along the Line offers a moving account of the people and communities surrounding the last steam railroad. The book includes a cd of Link's recordings of the railroad., O. Winston Link is America's most celebrated railroad photographer. Link began photographing the Norfolk and Western, the last major steam railroad in the United States, in the mid-1950s, when the N&W was converting its operations from steam to diesel. Link's N&W project captured the railroad industry at a moment of transition, before the triumph of the automobile and the airplane that ended passenger service on the line and before the corresponding dramatic reduction in the workforce. And, just as importantly, Link's work reveals a small-town way of life that was about to experience seismic shifts and in many cases vanish completely. The images in O. Winston Link: Life Along the Line focus on the people and communities surrounding the railroad, in particular recording life in the Appalachian portion of the Norfolk & Western's service area. The book is published in cooperation with the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, Virginia, which holds the complete archive of Link's N&W project. It replaces two previous Abrams books on Link, Steam, Steel & Stars and The Last Steam Railroad in America. O. Winston Link: Life Along the Line offers a broad view of the entire range of Link's portfolio of the last years of the Norfolk and Western in steam, including excellent examples of both the keystone work and of the photographs, such as modernist images, that have not been previously published.

  • A retired train book with some unpublished photography

O Winston Link's photographs of the Norfolk and Western railroad taken in the 1950's portrait the last images of the steam era at work as America's last great railroad. This book life along the line is the I wanted to own for a while. I use to borrow it at the library until I now own this train book. This one is a retired book because they made it expensive and out of print. Some of OWL's photos are unpublished until some include his famous ones and some that are not so ones after which are unpublished. This book includes a cd of Link's unreleased recordings of the N&W these were were sounds that wasn't able to be used in the sounds of steam railroading on the five cd set. It predicts the life along the n&w in 21 tracks some are similar in the set while others are never seen. The cd contains the newest recordings which are released when this train book was made. You could say that it could be the sixth cd of the sounds of steam railroading when you get the book. A young O. Winston link is featured in some of the sounds as it appeared in the general and mainline to panther. The first is 611 which later for the fire up 611 campaign in 2013. The rest are really cool. This the jewel I been wanting to own. I do have some calendars and cds and two book on him. But it was worth an effort.

  • A Like to the Past

Superb images and a CD full of actual train sounds take you back to the thrilling days of steam trains in America. The text is clear and concise, while the images - from the archives of the legendary O. Winston Link - are iconic. A treasure for many decades to come.

  • The link is all to true

An unmatched aural encapsulation of an era when mighty rolling steam powered machines knitted small town American together into a rural patchwork quilt. The link is all too true. All for the listening, put together by a consummate perfectionist.

  • N&W Steam Engines

    O. Winston Link rode with my late Father-in-law, and took a lot of these pictures. Later "Dad" was an Engineer on the J-Class # 611.
