Based on a series of books by Patrick O'Brian, and directed by Peter Weir, MASTER AND COMMANDER plunges viewers deep into the story of a British Navy ship at sea during the Napoleonic war. Russell Crowe stars as Aubrey, the charismatic captain who wrestles with issues like honor, pride, duty, sacrifice and loyalty while using ingenious tactics to engage his prey--a much larger and better-equipped French Man o' War. Paul Bettany plays his friend, the ship's doctor, who cautions Aubrey about letting revenge cloud his judgment after the French Man o' War almost sinks them in an early battle. Before the incredibly intense final skirmish the men battle a raging storm, launch an excursion to the Galapagos Islands, find time for grog-enhanced merriment, and endure some primitive surgery. Weir fills the film with a rich wealth of period detail, convincing dialogue, and the same haunting, dreamlike mood that has informed his best films, such as PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, THE LAST WAVE and THE TRUMAN SHOW. The wealth of sounds and sights on display are so evocative one can practically smell the salt air and feel the heave of the ocean. Russell is intense and inspiring as Aubrey, and Bettany proves a worthy match. MASTER AND COMMANDER is another triumph for Weir, and further evidence of his ability to fuse poetic realism with rousing entertainment.

    My lady and I are Russell Crowe fans. One of the best parts of this movie is the natural sound and not a bunch of chaos going on in the background music. Disc and cover are excellent and I’m happy with this purchase.

    To The Ends Of The World In A Wooden Ship

    This movie is awesome. The sets are authentic looking. The acting is terrific. The sound is big and realistic. It's got its roots in real history and that makes it even more compelling. They don't make movies like this very often. What we get instead is hyped up, comic book baloney. "Master and Commander" is made for intelligent adults, not the kiddies. It is one of my favorites.

    A better version of Master and Commander

    I really like this movie in its entirety. However, I had no idea what I was missing until I purchased this movie on Blu-ray. I have a pretty good home theater system and there are much more impressive sounding systems by far. But I have an a 9. 8 , with about 7400 watts of continuous bass output and I still had no idea what I was missing. Not just bass output , but overall sound quality is greatly improved from all of the speakers. If you really like this movie , it is definitely worth buying on Blu-ray! Russell Crowe never gives a bad performance.

    Adventure on the high seas at it best.... and worst.

    An epic film depicting the lives' and death's of those that chose the sea for their life's duration. This film deserves a sequel and I will purchase and watch it if it is cast with the dame players.

    If you like the sea and History, sit down and watch this.

    What a sleeper! My sister bought me the book and I have never got the chance to read it so I thought, what the heck, maybe I'll do the movie first. It was fun! Now it's time to find that novel and get more in depth with those wonderful characters..
