I wanted to see a film directed by John Malkovich, apparently the only one - so far. The Maoist madness of the seventies seemed similar to some of the present day world wide madness. An interesting film reflecting the Peruvian "Shining Path" guerilla movement and the individuals and government tasked in fighting it. The principal protaganist, a policeman who left a lucrative legal practice, is bent on always doing the "right thing". He works hard, knows how to swim in the waters of a corrupt, dictatorial government, and is a romantic at heart. This puts him into an interesting dilema - the films title basically sums this up. The ending is somewhat surprising but accents the idea that virtue and the "right thing" will always triumph. All in all a very interesting take on this part of the world, with a glimpse into day to day life, culture, geography. In my opinion a decent directorial debut from the enigmatic Malcovich.
