Use Rit fabric dye
Followed instruction on can and was trying to paint gray over off white so it should have covered good, I ended up with a gray and off white checkerboard. I tried a second can, same thing however now I get a darker gray and lighter gray checkerboard. So now I try black, 2 cans with similar results. Now I have a real mess, so with nothing to lose I use a sanding block medium grit and down the whole chair , now keep in mind this is a fabric chair and I end up with a gray checkerboard looking fabric. So I purchased what I should have in the first place Rit commercial fabric dye) and after 2 coats of black dye it I have a even looking colored chair.
