Synopsis
The men on board HMS Terror have every expectation of triumph. As part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition, the first steam-powered vessels ever to search for the legendary Northwest Passage, they are as scientifically supported an enterprise as has ever set forth. As they enter a second summer in the Arctic Circle without a thaw, though, they are stranded in a nightmarish landscape of encroaching ice and darkness. Endlessly cold, with diminishing rations, 126 men fight to survive with poisonous food, a dwindling supply of coal, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is far more terrifying. There is something out there in the frigid darkness: an unseen predator stalking their ship, a monstrous terror constantly clawing to get in.When the expedition's leader, Sir John Franklin, meets a terrible death, Captain Francis Crozier takes command and leads his surviving crewmen on a last, desperate attempt to flee south across the ice. With them travels an Inuit woman who cannot speak and who may be the key to survival, or the harbinger of their deaths. But as another winter approaches, as scurvy and starvation grow more terrible, and as the terror on the ice stalks them southward, Crozier and his men begin to fear that there is no escape. The Terror swells with the heart-stopping suspense and heroic adventure that have won Dan Simmons praise as "a writer who not only makes big promises but keeps them" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). With a haunting and constantly surprising story based on actual historical events, The Terror is a novel that will chill you to your core., The bestselling novel, "a brilliant, massive combination of history and supernatural horror" (Stephen King), now a major TV series. The men on board the HMS Terror have every expectation of finding the Northwest Passage. But what they don't expect is a monstrous predator lurking behind the Arctic ice. When the expedition's leader, Sir John Franklin, meets a horrifying end, Captain Francis Crozier takes command, leading his surviving crewmen on a last desperate attempt to flee south across the ice. But another winter is rapidly approaching, and with it, scurvy and starvation. Crozier and his men may find that there is no escaping the terror stalking them southward. And with the crushing cold and the fear of almost certain death at their backs, the most horrifying monster among them may be each other.

  • Eerie & a testament to human endeavor to explore the unknown and it's costs.

I've read this book before as a checkout from my local library. Wanted to have my own copy. I was turned on to this story after watching the AMC/PBS series. Both book and series are great! Book came as advertised and in less time than estimated.

  • The Terror by Dan Simmons

I bought this because I saw the first episode of the Series on AMC and was drawn in and decided to buy the book as The books are always better. My God though Far far better and actually very very scary. This is a great story that is loosely based on a true arctic expedition from the 1850's. It's very well written and Simmons does a great job of making the environment terrifying even without a supernatural element. The constant growling and screaming of the ice as giant slabs slide over and against one another like the tectonic plates, or the seracs that seem to grow out of the ice like the giant teeth of some angry god trying to crush the ships really amp up the tension. Not to mention the constant darkness and the negative seventy degree temperature that could kill a man in minutes. Add a ...

This historic/horror epic novel tells the sad but fascinating tale of the British ships Terror and Erebus, which became icebound in the Arctic for two years. Simmons adds a horrific twist I won't spoil. I'm about to reread this excellent story. Made into a very good television miniseries.'

  • History fiction, mental movie

Follow the story, page by page. Once you realize the pain, cold and vast emptiness, then try to process being hunted. It's a great read. I giggled unexpectedly in a few places. It's a quick read if books play like movies in your head. Enjoy.
