Originating as a spinoff of MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW premiered in 1960 and quickly charmed its way into the hearts of audiences with one of the most beloved television fathers of all time. Set in the fictitious environs of Mayberry, North Carolina, the series chronicled daily life in the peaceful Southern hamlet through the gently humorous eyes of town sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith). A widower raising his young son Opie (a pre-HAPPY DAYS Ron Howard) with the help of his live-in spinster aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), Andy capably navigated single parenthood with the same goodhearted wisdom that he brought to his law enforcement duties--that is, when he wasn't being hampered by the fidgety, bug-eyed antics of his bungling deputy sheriff Barney Fife (Don Knotts). What's not to like?
Although the Andy Griffith Show is available via syndication virtually 24/7 on some station somewhere, it's nice to have this collector's set with all of its episodes available for reruns and watching what one wants when one wants it. The show itself is a wonderful mirror of America's coming of age during a rather innovative period fraught with change and challenges. Thanks to it's relatively solid core values, however, it still goes down easy and remains an enjoyable pass-time to this day. Not that there aren't some politically incorrect episodes among the many priceless lessons. How could there not be, considering the scope of American history depicted, as well as Hollywood's penchant for preaching and its knack for over-simplification. Native Americans, Gypsies, motorcyclists, and yes, even women run afoul of stereo-typing, all in an effort to convey seemingly straightforward, sometimes almost naive messages. I love watching Andy and Barney go at it everyday lol. They are hilarious and I can’t get enough of them. I had to purchase the dvd set. So glad I did! Best show in the history of TV!
Love Andy and Barney. Takes me back to my youth when times were simpler. My favorite episode is “Mr. McBeevee”. The scene where Andy is trying to get Opie to admit the Mr. McBeevee is make believe is so emotional. The best line is when Andy says “... great series to watch from the 1960's, only thing the plastic box cheap & hard to get the dvd to release from the plastic tab . be very careful not to break the dvd

TAGS Entire Series DVD Collection Review

Excellent overall in spite of 249 episodes.
The series always maintained a high-quality consistency, even when Don Knotts left and the series and went to color. The B&W episodes look crisp as do the color ones even though they're not in Bluray. Excellent remastering job on the part of CBS/Paramount.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Neu

A cheap vacation
I like to think of the series as a much cheaper way to escape realism in today's world than an expensive trip to Disneyland. In both places, Mayberry and Disneyland, the characters are fun, harmless, engaging, warm, and always there when you need them.
