A nice instrument at a reasonable cost
This pretty little dulcimer is well-built and has a lovely, rich voice. I was actually quite surprised to get such a nice instrument at such a reasonable cost. I do recommend using a strap with it, as its light weight makes it a little prone to tip when you play the upper frets, especially before you work out the best angle for playing, but that's a small thing...your local music shop can install a couple of strap buttons for around $20.
That 6 1/2 fret will come in very handy down the road (BTW, if you're new to the dulcimer, don't be confused by the advertising...this dulcimer has more than six and a half frets! What it does have is A 6 1/2 fret, i.e., a half fret after fret 6. Not all dulcimers have one, which is why it's a selling point, but the wording can be confusing).
If I could have one little quibble, it would be that the action is a bit higher than I like, but it's a very minor point...it's not high enough that I'm uncomfortable playing it.
This picture, with the dulcimer next to my Woodrow strum stick and my Harpsicle harp, should give you a good idea of the relative size. I was a little worried, when I ordered it, that it would be too small to be comfortably playable, but it's actually quite a decent size.
I'm extremely pleased with my purchase, and would recommend this instrument to anyone who wants an introduction to the Appalachian/Mountain dulcimer. It's a good starter model.
