NotesIn 1973, John Stewart went to Nashville to record 'Cannons In The Rain' for RCA. He has fond memories of the session with guitarist Fred Carter, Jr. (father of current country hitmaker Deana Carter) and the other ace 'Nashville Cats' on the album, including steel guitarist Pete Drake and harmonica player Charlie McCoy. Stewart's 1974 album, 'Wingless Angels', was recorded in Los Angeles with such Hollywood session stars as drummer Russ Kunkel. This 20-track CD includes Stewart classics like Durange, Chilly Winds, Lady, The Outlaw, Survivors, Adelita, and Let The Big Horse Run.

  • Worth hearing...but not so much as his earlier albums.

Although not as strong, melodic, or anthemic as his earlier albums, Stewart reliably delivers his Americana stylings with taste & credibility. The instruments at play here seem not to be delighting in their part; no particular solo or fills are notable. There does seem to be too much noodling, redundant recycling of refrains. But the bottom lines is that it is John Stewart; a worthy artist. I just expected better from him.
