ONE OF THE BEST JAPANESE FILMS OF THE LAST 5 YEARS
I believe that a truly fine foreign film gives you a glimpse of the people in the country normally reserved for non-tourists. Departures tackles some very weighty subjects, like death, love, parental death, and forgiveness, and yet despite what would seem like very heavy topics to contend with, this movie is filled with humor, pathos, and most of all love and humanity. No spoilers here. I must watch 120-150 films a year, and I can say without reservation that this is one of the finest foreign films ever. Its characters and their stories will live on in your memory for a very long time, and it is the kind of film that makes you proud to be human. Highest recommendation without reservation.
Also highly rated, the italian film, "The Great Beauty".
