King Solomon's Mines
Of all the Allan Quatermain movies this is the best. It does not exactly follow the book by Haggard except for character names, and the general drift; yet it is entertainingly close. The performances by Kerr and Granger are exceptional. Hollywood acting in the pre-FX era at its very best and reminiscent of Bogart and Bacall. The minor technical glitches are understandable, for example the Indian elephant used in the first scene contrasts badly with the African elephants if your eyes are quick enough. Obviously this is because Indian elephants are easily trained and safer to work with in comparison to their African brethren. Otherwise the costumes are impeccable as are the firearms. Note Quatermain's double brimmed hat. The scenery is pristine and the color great. Highly recommended.
