This album is beyond fantastic
NEVERMORE's Dreaming Neon Black plays gloomy and exceptionally dark Heavy Metal music. Sound wise, this is one of the most unique albums. The atmosphere is not only impressive, it's downright scary. It expertly expresses the emotions of a man slowly going insane after losing his love. It’s one of the few albums that genuinely disturbs me when I listen to it. Beyond Within sets the stage for the emotional journey to come, displaying rage and sorrow in equal measure and beckoning the listener to take the plunge by concluding with 'Welcome to the fall … of one man’s sanity'. This track grunts out a monstrously heavy statement that is a microcosm of this album. Heavy, melodic, soaring, and haunting. The album is truly a rollercoaster ride of grief with the anger and denial of I Am the Dog, The Fault Of The Flesh and Poison Godmachine being juxtaposed with the depression and bargaining of No More Will, All Play Dead and the title track. Poison Godmachine rocks yet another unique sticky riff with that rapid hammer-on/pull-off sequence. The Hetfield reminiscent chorus on Cenotaph ("Awake !") adds a really nice touch of theatrics, more on the ominous side, if not outright spooky, and with that efficient plainness. Deconstruction is another feat as Dane goes for the weary old man's voice on the verse quite convincingly before swiftly switching to his power tone 'Who will rape the weak ?!'. The track being one of the more accomplished numbers here showcases the heavy metal / darker alt-metal with a commanding grip. The Fault Of The Flesh is an exceptionally great number. Drums are going in a frenzy yet very tastefully. Dane is at his most psychotic on this song, as his 'psychosis-voice' has so many colours and extremes of expression. The guitar riffs pummel the senses and the harmony solos sound just as unsound as Dane himself. Perhaps the most harrowing aspect of the album is the fact that the main character never finds acceptance but allows himself to be swallowed by despair on closer Forever. It’s a truly haunting number built solely on bass and clean guitar while Dane harmonizes with himself in anguish. It ends shortly after two minutes only to be followed by a long silence. After Dane’s untimely death, I can see this track as a painful metaphor. The long silence produces a yearning to go back for just a few more seconds of that amazingly unique voice. This remastered issue covers a JUDAS PRIEST Love Bites, which is purely metal and done with all the right attitude. This album is beyond fantastic.
