So emotionally investing despite the frustration
Trico does not do what you tell him probably 60% of the time. It can get frustrating when it goes long stretches, but in short stretches it adds to the sense of him being an independent creature. The story is engaging and an emotional rollercoaster. And of course a beautiful world, which is to be expected from this creator.
