Best version of this model
This model is the best in the range with great detail and outstanding performance. 5 pole skew wound motor gives excellent smooth slow speeds and top performance speeds as well as pulling loads. This model has pickups in the tender that gives beautiful smooth transition over points and crossings. It has sprung buffers and great traction with its weight. Still the best value 9F
Obviously this model has been superseded by the 2022 Hornby 9F and it's not as high spec' as the Bachmann one but the loco drive Railroad 9F has to be the best value 9 available. Weighty enough to pull a decent freight train it has a loco drive chassis and pickups on the engine and tender yet they aren't connected by an unsightly bundle of wires. DCC ready 8 pin, the chip goes in the loco. They don't have the detail of their successors but once fitted with smaller couplings and weathered you'll be more than happy. generally of acceptable quality for a second hand unit
Generally the Locomotive is OK however the Tender is not so good, the centre set of wheels are very stiff to turn (Partly seized) and when it has been run before you can see wear marks in one place on those wheels. Fantastic Detail and Value - relatively!!
The Hornby 9F 2-10-0 is known to not be a 'premium model', but nobody told Hornby that when they made it. Fantastic level of detail, 10 driven wheels help traction and realism immensely, and the sprung buffers and separate handrails add to the realism. Lovely model and capable of both crawling smoothly and hauling 'a realistic load' - which means BIG - it is quite heavy, which aids traction.
