Durant claims the Bible is accurate history
I was disappointed to hear Durant claiming that there can be no morality without Christianity and that the Bible contains accurate history of human culture. Nothing could be further from the truth. While SOME events in the Bible may reflect actual events, the books in the Bible are largely based on mythology and no authentic scholar would claim otherwise. Human beings are moral because morality serves a survival purpose, NOT because some invisible 'god' in the sky threatens them with eternal suffering if they are not moral. If anything, the Bible simply contains the common sense commandments that existed prior to the Bible being written. I am surprised Durant does not know this. I also had a problem with Durant's explaination for why Africans failed to develop the kind of advanced civilization we find in Europe and other parts of the world. He claims African life is just too hard to allow Africans to do anything but hunt for their next meal. I have lived in Africa for many years and what I found is the exact opposite. Unlike Europeans, who have always had to figure out ways to survive harsh winters, the weather in Africa is mild and until recently, game and fruits were freely available.
