A step up!!
The new mark iii 1.4x teleconverter is head and shoulders above the previous versions. I did some systematic test shots of a Coke can, two at 400mm and two at 300mm, with my new Canon 100-400mm mark ii lens and there was virtually ZERO difference between the shots with vs without the 1.4 - it was impressive! I'll let you decide which ones are which. I showed a friend the shots and he couldn't pick the ones taken with the 1.4 vs without. IF there is a difference, you must have done some scientific study. That or its nothing a little post sharpening wont fix in short order. Auto focus works just fine. Its a TAD BIT slower with the converter, but not that you'd ever really notice. It is still pretty fast. And you only get f8 at 400mm. Cant go any bigger. If you want f7.1 then you gotta zoom back to around 300mm. this may or may not depend on what lens you are using as well. I recommend this unit to anyone looking to get more reach without looking to break the bank. I see virtually no image degradation across several focal lengths and several fstops. I paid 380 for mine brand new. A used one would be an even better deal. The Coke can images were untouched. Other than cropping them to size and putting the 4 of them together into one image. NO editing was done to any of them. They are all straight out of the camera.

Sharper than the also excellent 1.4x II model
I've used Canon 1.4x II extenders with my L series lenses for about 15 years. They've delivered everything you'd expect from Canon's pro line lenses. After reading reviews of the type III, I decided to buy a 1.4x III to pair with my 100-400mm ISII lens. On receiving it, I shot some test photos under controlled conditions with the 100-400mm/1.4x II and 100-400mm/1.4x III combos. While both were very good, there was a noticeable difference in sharpness with the 1.4x III. If you have an ISII L-series lens, and you're interested in adding some versatility to your kit in a relatively inexpensive, compact and lightweight package, you should definitely consider this.

Great Accessory for Long EF Glass
I purchased this to accompany an also-purchased EF 300mm f/2.8 II. I found that I prefer the 300mm focal length for sports over a 400, but want to make sure I have my basics covered. The total cost of the lens and extender was still far less than purchasing a similar condition EF 400mm f2.8 II or III, let alone an RF 400mm f/2.8! I don’t see any difference in IQ on my R bodies with an adapter. Highly recommend!!

its great with some lens not really good with others even with practice however if one can pay for it it would be ok to own -- borrow or rent one first -- be sure it is in the type of use for you or disappointment will follow ,, i still like it for a few things... will not resell it ,, thanx for reading my2cents

Great item at better price
This item was received in mint condition at a great price. Its allows me to get action shots on the baseball field from limited areas because of its reach. Recommend it highly and definitely works a lot better in daytime lighting

Gives great 1.4x magnification for certain telephoto lenses. You have to be careful because it also reduces your f-stop, so it's easy to get blurry or soft images where just cropping the original would be better. Needs a lot of light for auto-focus. But when used correctly, it's great.

Short & Sweet with a Long Reach
As a pixel peeper I didn't expect much out of this 1.4X extender, but after my ist day of shooting birds-in-flight I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I use it primarily with the Canon 100-400mm II lens to bring it close to the long end of my Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens (560mm vs 600mm). Now I always have the extender on that lens when I use it in the wild. Is the 100-400mm sharper without it... Maybe, but if so, not too, too much. I was equally surprised with the AF performance. Is it as fast or versatile as the naked 100-400mm - NO! Is it acceptable - Yes, and with practice it can be awesome. With the Canon lens I mention hear I seem to get all of my focusing points, but in reality, even though it looks like they are all working, and they will grab a focus, they do not lock on perfectly... so you will get a lot of soft images using anything but the center focusing points. As advertised, its not as fast, but it is surprisingly fast compared to what I expected... Surprisingly! Another thing worth mentioning is that it is Super easy to manually focus my combination. Ive shot dragon flies from 10' perched on a dancing weed on a windy day and got excellent results, as well as birds-in-flight. Yes, the experience of the photographer comes into play, but if you need that extra reach, this extender will give it to you, and with great results if you learn how to work with it.

The real deal!
Wow! I previously (and foolishly) bought a Canon 2x extender that I assumed to be automatic and subsequently proved to be a manual one. This 1.4x automatic extender was the real deal. I've used it with a Canon 200 mm lens f 2.8 lens and my Canon 100-400 mm zoom to take sports photographs on my Canon 1DS Mark 2, and in both cases the subjects snap into focus. This - in the case of the 100-400 zoom at the fraction of the cost of purchasing a Canon super zoom.

Exactly what l needed
Picked up the 1.4 extender for my canon 100-400 mark ii lens. Had to micro adjust a little but once set its tack sharp. Gives me the extra focal length that l needed. Gives much sharper images from the extender than cropping from the 100-400 alone.

Nice little hockey puck for your camera bag
Very durable product, albeit heavy for its size. It seems to do best with images that are within a few hundred yards. I would not recommend this product for precision photography of subjects that are a half-mile away or further as the distortion over great distances (i.e. from heat waves, etc.) affects image quality. I am using it in-between a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Canon 70-200mm lens and it works well for bringing things in on shorter ranges (I use it for photographing wolves and it provides an excellent sharpness in capturing every hair in crisp detail). Rugged and works well in extreme outdoor conditions for high-end professional use and advanced field photography.
