NotesYo-Yo Ma follows up his Gold-Certified SONGS OF JOY AND PEACE with a landmark Americana album project. In the tradition of APPALACHIAN JOURNEY and OBRIGADO BRAZIL, Yo-Yo Ma once again embraces styles and traditions that go beyond classical music by bringing together four American string virtuosos and creating a new kind of chamber ensemble. THE GOAT RODEO SESSIONS is a landmark album project which uniquely showcases cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin player Chris Thile, with special guest vocalist, Aoife O'Donovan on two tracks.
Very good CD. It has great presence, soundstage, and imaging, and texture of instraments
The soundstage isn't the widest, but is wide enough to make you feel in the music. It has a good upfront presence, so you can say the soundstage has good depth. There is a good bass presence from the celo which has good texture. This is a folk album wich plays kind of like a jazz album. If you want to add something different to your collection other than just jazz and what-not, this is a great addition. Sound has great texture from all instruments. One of my favorites.
Wonderful performance but the songs are a little repetitive
The recording is excellent and it is easy to understand why it received a technical Grammy for the recording. The music is, as expected, is performed with excellence and passion. The only reason for 4 stars is that after a few songs they begin to sound a little repetitive.
Some nice pieces musically but a bit too much going on with too many musicians playing at once for my tastes. No knock on Yo-Yo Ma or Stuart Duncan but the Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile only album is a better choice.
