SynopsisDuring this period, the British army earned itself a formidable reputation as a fighting force. However, due to its role as a police force at home, and demonisation by American propaganda during the American Revolution (1763-1776), the army was viewed as little removed from a penal institution run by aristocratic dilettantes. This view, still held by many today, is challenged by Stuart Reid, who paints a picture of an increasingly professional force. This was an important time of change and improvement for the British Army, and British Redcoat 1740-1793 fully brings this out in its comprehensive examination of the lives, conditions and experiences of the late 18th-century infantryman

  • The Redcoats are coming!

Anyone who enjoys early American history should get into a specialty subject like this and learn as much about it as possible, but if you want to round out your general knowledge about this period, this title will help you understand not just the British Army, but the colonials and a variety of other nations and their intensely intertwined relationships. Studying an army during a particular period is not always easy, but the Osprey books give you enough knowledge to let you go deeper by giving you topics to pursue, or to just satisfy an immediate need. This one is a perfect companion for any Revolutionary War scholar because it does give a very comprehensive picture of the soldiers that extended the Empire from sunset to sunset until the sun never sat again.

  • Small But Detailed

This is a great book for those with an interest in the period. And being an Osprey book it is not only well written but also well illustrated. Lots of good information on the common soldier of the era. Excellent book.
