Synopsis
One of the greatest military commanders in Roman history, Gaius Julius Caesar, owes his unique renown to his military successes spanning a period of 15 years. During the Late Consular period, he greatly enlarged Rome's empire in the West by conquering Gaul; he also raided southern Britain twice and fought and won a civil war against the senatorial faction of another great conqueror - Pompey - in Greece, North Africa and Spain, to become Rome's unchallenged dictator. Despite his subsequent assassination, he bequeathed his name to the first Imperial dynasty. Caesar proved himself an unrivalled master of command and control. Although popularly associated with the citizen legions of heavy infantry, most of his victories were actually won by coalitions of Roman and foreign allied troops, thus laying the foundations for the cosmopolitan military machine of the Imperial centuries. Drawing on a wide range of literary research and recent archaeology, this fascinating volume examines the armies of Julius Caesar, analyzing the evidence for their varied dress, armour and weapons to create a detailed picture of how they lived and fought. Book jacket., Gaius Julius Caesar remains the most famous Roman general of all time. Although he never bore the title, historians since Suetonius have judged him to be, in practice, the very first 'emperor' - after all, no other name in history has been synonymous with a title of imperial rule. Caesar was a towering personality who, for better or worse, changed the history of Rome forever. His unscrupulous ambition was matched only by his genius as a commander and his conquest of Gaul brought Rome its first great territorial expansion outside the Mediterranean world. His charismatic leadership bounded his soldiers to him not only for expeditions 'beyond the edge of the world' - to Britain - but in the subsequent civil war that raised him to ultimate power. What is seldom appreciated, however is that the army he led was as varied and cosmopolitan as those of later centuries, and it is only recently that a wider study of a whole range of evidence has allowed a more precise picture of it to emerge. Drawing on a wide range of up-to-date research, the authors examine the armies of Julius Caesar in detail, creating a detailed picture of how they lived and fought., This book draws upon the latest research to explain and illustrate the Roman and allied troops of the consular armies led by Julius Caesar in his Gallic and civil wars. - i***0 (264)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufThe kit was as-described in the listing, new and still in the plastic wrap. Shipped in solid outer box. Delivery took quite a while courtesy of the disjointed USPS, but the seller can't be held for any fault there.
