Smug, rebellious, honest, blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett's first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vision. The romantic score is every bit as lush and dramatic as the photography, borrowing folk melodies from the Old South to make the tragic war concrete. Heavy nostalgic tones pervade the often witty dialogue and larger-than-life charms and faults of the leads. GONE WITH THE WIND stands among the greatest epic dramas ever filmed.

    American Civil War Drama Classic.

    Created 9 years after the Great Depression in color. 1930. Actors were household legends of the time. Extreme detail given to scripps and stage scenes. So realistic it's a must see. Drama and emotion at its best. If Rhett and Scarlet were alive today. Now only film has saved them.

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE. THE CHARACTERS MAKE THIS MOVIE GREAT THE WAY THEY EMBODY THEIR ROLE. IT IS AS IF THEY ARE THE REAL PEOPLE OF THE PERIOD AND LIVED THIS LIFE DEPICPTED IN THE MOVIE. BEAUTIFUL SCENES, CLOTHING AND HEARTFELT MOVIE. EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE IN THEIR LIFETIME. AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!

    Great actors and good entertainment with historical background.

    This is a CLASSIC and should be in everyone's DVD library! Many literary references are made about this movie and unfortunately, today's youth have no clue about this time in our history. Viewing this movie should be part of EVERY high school history class, whether in the North of South.

    My favorite movie of all time!

    Gone With the Wind represents Hollywood storytelling at its best. High budget, beautiful scenery and great acting! A historically accurate piece of fiction and an asset to American heritage.
