Second-rate film - avoid!
In retrospect it's no wonder nobody could remember this film being released (at least in the UK). While 2001 could, rightly, be accused of being pretentious and, at times, a bit ponderous, it was extraordinarily gripping as a drama, beautifully made as a film and something of a breakthrough in how it represented the (then) looming era of computerisation. In contrast, 2010 is dull, plodding, unadventurous in its use of graphics and completely fails to engage despite the best efforts of some fine film actors. An impressive sequel to a classic original.
I first saw this when it came out, but never since. Having just watched 2001 again it seemed appropriate to give this a second view. It was far cheaper to buy this DVD than to view this online! The film is a fitting sequel to 2001 and the sets, clothing and space ships are just as good here and where appropriate true to the original. Although there was a 15 year gap before this sequel was made it is now 40 years old. Prophetically the background to the story is tension between the US and Russia. This is a lot more accessible than certain parts of 2001 - particularly the beginning and the end, however there is still has some Kubrickesque weirdness towards the end of 2010. The end is dramatic tense as it unfolds and also uplifting. However what effect this has on the tensions in the ... I first saw this when it came out, but never since. Great film, terrible scan
Good film, terrible scan/transfer to DVD. They've done it in widescreen, but not proper widescreen, so it's stuck in the old fashioned 4:3 with massive letterboxing. If you try to stretch it out to fit a modern widescreen tv it results in a very low resolution picture. They could so easily have scanned this in 16:9 which would have made it watchable and more enjoyable. It's a hard film to get hold of, but even so, avoid this version and wait for it to be released properly in 16:9 or on blu-ray.Good film, terrible scan/transfer to DVD.
