Reviews
"Grandma Gatewood's Walk is a brilliant look at an America--both good and bad--that has slipped away, seen through the eyes and feet of one of America's most unlikely heroines. Gatewood's story suggests anything is possible; no matter your age, gender, or quality of your walking shoes." --STEPHEN RODRICK, AUTHOR OF THE MAGICAL STRANGER, "Go, Granny, Go! . . . This astonishing tale will send you looking for your hiking boots. A wonderful story, wonderfully told." --CHARLES MCNAIR, BOOKS EDITOR AT PASTE MAGAZINE AND AUTHOR OF PICKETT'S CHARGE, "Grandma Gatewood's Walk is sure to fuel not only the dreams of would-be hikers, but debates on the limits of endurance, the power of determination, and the nature of myth." --EARL SWIFT, AUTHOR OF THE BIG ROADS

Synopsis
2014 National Outdoor Book Award Winner in History / Biography Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, sixty-seven-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. By September 1955 she stood atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, sang "America, the Beautiful," and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it." Driven by a painful marriage, Grandma Gatewood not only hiked the trail alone, she was the first person--man or woman--to walk it twice and three times. At age seventy-one, she hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity, and appeared on TV with Groucho Marx and Art Linkletter. The public attention she brought to the trail was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction. Author Ben Montgomery interviewed surviving family members and hikers Gatewood met along the trail, unearthed historic newspaper and magazine articles, and was given full access to Gatewood's own diaries, trail journals, and correspondence. Grandma Gatewood's Walk shines a fresh light on one of America's most celebrated hikers., Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, having survived a rattlesnake strike, two hurricanes, and a run-in with Harlem gangsters, she stood atop Maine's Mt. Katahdin. Driven by a painful marriage to an oppressive husband, Gatewood became the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail alone, as well as the first person--man or woman--to walk it twice and three times. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity, and appeared on TV and on the pages of Sports Illustrated . The public attention she brought to the footpath, and her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches, led to bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction. The story of Grandma Gatewood will inspire readers of all ages by illustrating the full power of human spirit and determination. Even those who know of Gatewood don't know the full story--a story of triumph from pain, rebellion from brutality, hope from suffering.

The recent music CD purchase was reasonably priced, order processed without delay & the CD shipped promptly. The song selection & sound quality of this CD are very nice. This seller’s reply to my question via email provided the information I needed in order to make the purchase of this music CD. Overall, I would buy from this seller again. Other seller’s I contacted sent an auto-reply stating they receive too many E-messages therefore they do not answer questions re: their products!

  • not what it appears to be

I purchase this book because it was stated that it was about a hike on the Appalachian trail. The book did cover a some of it, but was mostly about Grandma's life and past. The book barley mentioned the 100 miles of wilderness in Maine that offered no stops at civilized areas. It just skipped right over the most important section of the trail that took several days to hike. Sheer disappointment with this one and it had the potential to be a great story.

  • Grandma Gateway walks with me

Loved this book so much that I wondered just why I haven't walked the Appalachian trail. Emma was a strong determined woman who overcame many obstacles. She made a lot of friends on her night stays and visits to towns. She enjoyed the peace of the outdoors and makes you feel it too.

  • Grandma's can do anything.

Every woman should read this book. It shows the determination one can have if the want something bad enough. She made this sacrifice for all so everyone can enjoy the this beautiful country. Great book.
