Hal Moore was a superior officer in an extremely difficult situation. Mel Gibson portrays him superbly. Sam Elliot, as the Major Sergeant, is utterly compelling. Barry Pepper is intriguing as Joe Galloway, the journalist covering the Ia Drang catastrophe.
Many films have been made about Vietnam. This film accurately demonstrates how unprepared the US was going up against the Communist enemy. This first engagement in the war is riveting. The first casualties of the eventual ~59,000.
The film addresses the historical assessment of America’s role, post-French involvement. To truly appreciate the film, Fletcher Prouty’s JFK book will give the viewer an appreciation of what that war was actually about...
This film portrays the grim reality of the young men dying there. Nothing glorious about it.
This film is very highly recommended.
