The Stories About Those Who Were Left Behind...
If your grandparents lived through the war and recounted stories of worrying about loved ones who had left hearth and home to fight, and wondering whether or not they were safe whenever they heard planes fly overhead, this show's for you. From the mother whose only son was eager to join up and do his civil duty, to the conscientious objector; the young teenagers just coming of age, to the farming couple just trying to eke out a living; the self-important ladies' club president to the down-trodden housewife with an abusive sod of a husband; the lonely widow with her dog, to the woman with a scandalous secret--they're all here in this lovely English village, facing an uncertain future as the war unfolds. The first episode was a tad slow as they developed the characters, but once they did, you'll be worrying for the characters' well-being yourself! For history buffs, you'll be pleased that the dates and events in the war are accurate, but if you're looking for a "war movie" with battles and lots of tanks and battleships, you won't see that many. But that's not the point, is it? This is a story about those who were left behind, trying to support the war effort and keep the "Home Fires" burning without losing their minds. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT SEASON!

The British Homefront's Handling Of WWII
A great series which was cancelled for no good reason by ITV in Britain. In all my BBC viewing, this series captures the essence of what the home front citizens endured during WWII. The acting is superb. You will never forget the townspeople and their struggles. I felt as if I was living in their village and had been introduced personally to each character. You will not be disappointed in purchasing this product. I watch it often and never grow tired seeing it after many, many viewings. Add Home Fires to your DVD collection today.

A small English village facing WWII
There are a wide variety of charaters who are real people. Many stories within different families in a very difficult era in a recent past. Beautifully played by both male and female cast. Must see season 2!

The struggles on the home front were real and heart wrenching.
Excellent story line and equally engaging actors. This short lived series should have been completed.. I highly recommend.

If you like English drama and WWII this is for you
We watch a lot of English drama on PBS but they are long in coming and not not regularly shown so the DVD is the way to go. This series gives you the real feel for how it was in England before we got in the war. Things looked bad and people had to have a stiff upper lip.

Masterpiece Theater Dramas are the best around.
I love British series'. Home Fires is right up there with Call The Midwife.

Another Quality Show from the Brits
Very realistic for the period, and true to the reality of life for women during that period. I loved it!

Good story line with well written character. Even the bad guy was written so you hated him.
