Here we go... (why is this review being held up?)
To delineate, this review is about the movie – not the real life Megan Leavey. Now let’s move on. Summary of the movie: Leavey, dejected from a bitter life, joins the Marines, is introduced to the K9 unit as she was caught drunk and pissing in front of the Provost Marshall’s office, becomes a K9 handler, teams with Rex, and the pair deploy. During a mission both Leavey and Rex suffer concussion wounds from an IED. Leavey separates on a medical, returns home to the same-ole, and Rex carries on active duty for a spell until he too, is medically done. Leavey petitions DoD to adopt Rex, her petition is ultimately granted and her and Rex live happily ever after. Enter rolling credits, sad music, a song I like “Rise” from Eddie Vedder, and eject the DVD for the same ole DVD graveyard of quick resell or shelf.
Apart from the thin twisted insight a novice will get into the military K9 world, the actors, for all of their blossoming talent (not) could have easily been randomly pulled from the street. Good boy Rex, mediocre job Leavey and cast, done. Next. No fancy fires here.
Now for the reality: Enormous respect and gratitude for the courage of the real Megan Leavey to fight for her K9. Most of you will never know the stresses of combat, or especially the stress of tag-teaming the enemy with your best furry friend, as bullets fly. Megan, we're proud of you, the sacrifices you and your K9 made to keep this country free. Thank you.
