Sean Connery, the Original Action Hero
The Wind and the Lion is one of three great action movies that Sean Connery made in the mid 1970s. The other two are Robin and Marion and The Man Who Would be King. All three are great, but The Wind and the Lion is my favourite. Loosely based on a true incident TW&TL takes place in early 20th century Morocco. The Great Powers are vying for control and moving inexorably towards a world war. Meanwhile a local Berber chieftain (Connery) is causing problems for everyone by kidnapping Europeans and holding them for ransom. When he kidnaps a young American widow (Candice Bergen) and her two children it causes an international incident and brings the United States under President Teddy Roosevelt (Brian Keith) onto the world stage.
The Wind and the Lion is a well written and acted movie full of action and adventure; with sweeping battle scenes, political infighting and an unlikely romance. It's revisionist history to be sure, but it's a whole lot of full, with Connery in full command whenever he is on the screen. Definitely worth owning!
