The epic tale of wrongful imprisonment, adventure and revenge, in its definitive translation Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to use the treasure to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas' epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. Translated with an Introduction by ROBIN BUSS.
It has taken me a week to get halfway as it has over 1200 pages but it is without doubt so far one of the great novels, beautifully written or translated in this penguin version, thus making it very absorbing and thoroughly entertaining.
The film versions athough not bad do not do this story anywhere close to the rightful amount of justice this book deserves as there is so much content to enjoy that a 2 or 3 hour movie can only scratch the surface to produce only a "greatest hits" style of interpretation.
In summary, read it for yourself and you will not be disappointed.
Also the copy I have although it is second hand, it is in very good nick and I will definitely purchase other books from this company in the future.
