Ron is one of the best sellers of NOS and used bike components out there! He really knows what he is selling, and always includes all the relevant information, measurements, etc. in his listings so that you can figure out if what you are buying will work without having to ask a lot of questions! Also, packing and shipping is really fast. Even if you see something out there that looks a bit less expensive, it is well worth paying Ron a bit more for excellent product knowledge and service!

Why are you asking me to review this product?
Seriously. The Shimano XT line is a benchmark of quality. A similar XTR cassette is better, because about 1 1/2 ounces lighter, but is eXTRa expensive. That's why they add an R. It is tempting to say an XTR cassette CANNOT BE BEAT. I am dead certain a lot of folks would agree with that. The few who don't would say Recon. My response would be Track record. And then the argument would start, everyone with thier own favorite data and cost benefit analysis. But none of that matters to the current instance. This cassette was used. I looked very carefully at the wear and decided the value ( to ME) was worth so much. I bid accordingly. And was lucky enough to be able to buy it. Of course I am pleased to have it. If in fact the reader is looking to me for advice on evaluating a cassette, let me ... Seriously. The Shimano XT line is a benchmark of quality. If in fact the reader is looking to me for advice on evaluating a cassette, let me try to help. First point, weight. Does it matter to you? If so, google Weight Weenies and scope. It's far from complete but can serve as a vague idea of the what's up. there is XTR, then XT, then LX, then the run of the mill garbage. Prices break roughly in that order too. SRAM has a similar hierarchy. The break point between 970 and 980 is worth your attention. 970 = heavy, 980 = light. The second point is at least a important and a bit harder to master. Wear. A worn out cassette isn't worth much, no matter how light it is. It takes a bit of practice for the eye to recognize wear. You are not looking for dirt. You are looking for metal deformation. Visualize the casset on the wheel, on the bike, being pulled on by the chain. Which side of the tooth is the chain applying force to? THAT is where to look for metal deformation. Not just on one tooth, but all of them. You need good focus and good light to show you the wear. If you don't have good focus and good light, you are using esp. It's not an accident. If you can see clearly and you can't see wear, whoo-who!
