Entertaining elite/servant contrast in early 20th century England
This 1971-75 TV series with IMDb rating 8.4 draws clear and entertaining contrasts between the upper class family living "upstairs" and their servants living "downstairs" in early 20th century England. Historical events sometimes intervene, such as World War 1. The patriarch is a member of parliament. As chief servant managing the household and the other servants, the Scottish butler is especially well drawn. He's filled with honesty and integrity, and he's proud rather than shamed to be in service.

Revisiting the 70's via 1904.
My wife was a great "Upstairs-Downstairs" fan in the 70's and is now, of course, a "Downton Abbey" devotee. I bought this collection for her as a gift and she has thoroughly enjoyed watching again after all these years. In contrast to "Downton Abbey," much more of the focus seems to be under-stairs. Well worth watching again.

A lot of fun!
Upstairs Downstairs is a very enjoyable series. The characters are memorable, and their experiences touching. Romance, but without excessive angst, and a generous dollop of humor, makes this series a pleasure to watch. I enjoyed these much more than Downton Abbey. The 40th anniversary set has subtitles, which are important given strong accents of Mr. Hudson and others. Gorgeous and authentic costumes, sets and cars.

This is a classic saga. Jean Marsh has done an excellent job in creating this epic. Greatly enjoyable! Historic connections and real life.

No Downton Abbey!
It is no Downton Abbey! I had seen the original Upstairs 30+ years ago. Unfortunately, I recently viewed the entire Downton Abbey series. There is no comparison. Upstairs looks amateurish compared to D.A.

Classical themed storyline of 1900's into the 1920's with a comical twist.
I saw a few episodes of Upstairs Downstairs many years ago and the series intrigued me due to the early 1900's setting in the British Hierarchy of a Family Upstairs with the head of the family being a member of Parliament who doesn't come from a rich family, and the Downstairs family being the servants who engage in interactions with the upstairs and the downstairs families in such a way that draws one into the feeling of sharing their intricate routines and differences in a serious and comical manner. I don't want to give away the enjoyment of viewing all five Series, however Downstairs you will find the head butler Mr. Hudson and the Matronly cook Mrs. Bridges, and the Parlor Maid Rose, who together hold firm control over their brood of misfits, and the varying antics of the Upstairs family as they bring their own brand of turmoil and chaos in each episode, considering their place in society. Excellent choices of period clothing, terminology and behavioral acting within the cast. This series began the British invasion of daily British behavior in the early 1900's. Well worth watching for the history involved in the storyline as an added bonus. Comedy, drama, intrigue, suspense, and romance.

Terrible, horrible. Save your money!!!!
Old and outdated. Well, more then I expected. Picture quality is terrible and sound isn't much better. It seems to pick up a few plot lines from Downton Abby but, there is no comparison between the two. Acting in pitiful and music is pathetic. Worst buy ever. The first two disc, I think that's right, are in black and white because of the strike during that time of filming. Cheaply reproduced and all around terrible.

Upstairs Downstairs Complete Series
The product was in excellent condition; no complaint there. However, the acting and story line, especially after viewing Downton Abbey, was terrible. Everything seemed to be produced on a economy level stage. Difficult to stay with. Almost a burlesque of acting. Will be selling or giving to a more appreciative customer.

Problems with this set.
I really wanted to get this set. However, I am having problem getting it to go from episode to episode. Also there is a huge section of commercials at the beginning. I am hoping I can figure out the episodes issue.

I was not told a. Strike was going on an most would be in black and white.. I bought for color, to. See the beautiful dresses and lavish room's, so it was disappointing,if I had known about the black and white thing I would not have bought it.
