CITIZEN KANE is Orson Welles's greatest achievement--and a landmark of cinema history. The story charts the rise and fall of a newspaper publisher whose wealth and power ultimately isolates him in his castle-like refuge. The film's protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, was based on a composite of Howard Hughes and William Randolph Hearst--so much so that Hearst tried to have the film suppressed. Every aspect of the production marked an advance in film language: the deep focus and deeply shadowed cinematography (from Gregg Toland); the discontinuous narrative, relying heavily on flashbacks and newsreel footage (propelled by a script largely written by Herman L. Mankiewicz); the innovative use of sound and score (sound by Bailey Fesler and James G. Stewart, music composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann); and the ensemble acting forged in the fires of Welles's Mercury Theatre (featuring the film debuts of, among others, Joseph Cotten, Everett Sloane, and Agnes Moorehead). Every moment of the film, every shot, has been choreographed to perfection. Still a great film.
Great film, full of great innovations, it was innovative in using a multi-character narrative technique, inspired cinematography, make-up, music, etc, etc. Nevertheless, there are a number of films that bypass Kane in terms of powerful emotional impact and artistic dexterity. "Citizen Kane" - Review
I can describe this movie in four words, "I Love This Movie"!!! Orson Wells is not only a great actor, he is very, very, very unique as a director. This film is an experiment with cinematography and editing, as well as screenwriting. It has been listed as the third greatest movie ever made by the polls, and sometimes number one by critics. Now I finally see what everyone is talking about
I am a huge classic movie fan, but for some reason Citizen Kane has eluded me until now. Now I finally see what everyone is talking about and why it is such a big deal. Don't be put off by the beginning of the movie where it seems like an old newsreel. I was wondering if the whole movie was going to be like that, but it isn't. After the first few minutes it picked up quickly and was engaging throughout. I recommend everyone to see this movie. It does a good job in explaining why many of the people that are idolized become what they become and make the decisions that they make. It was difficult to decide, though which characters and which to hate since they switched a few times, especially the title character, but that's usually how it is with people - sometimes lovable and sometimes hated. Fascinating story.
Me and my family have visited Hearst Castle a few times and are blown away by the excess of how the man lived. I had read quite a bit about William Randolph Hearst and had heard reviews about this movie. I would have to agree that it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was produced by Orson Welles who at the time had never made a movie of any kind and was given a green light by RKO studios with no strings attached. Something that was unheard of back then. Also another thing to consider is the fact that none of the actors had ever been in a major film before. Keep in mind that a lot of the scenes in the film are a bit exaggerated and at the time Mr. Hearst did everything he could to stop the film from ever being released it's a very good movie about a man who lived a life that no one today could ever accomplish ever again.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht

Great movie, however a depiction is open to conversation
Great. Thanks. Donald Trump had nothing on this guy. Not true however, William Randalfph Hearst by all sorts loved life, loved art and culture. He didn't migrate to loneliness and pass away broken hearted as Charles Foster Kane is portrayed. Films were never the same after this one was made
I have always been a fan of Orson Wells, including his radio Work this film is very innovative from the camera angles to the usage of shadows and lighting. I would say that this film changed the way our films were made. The DVD was defective. It took two days of CPU time to reconvstruct it before I could get a playable copy. When I did, the only playable copy had the commentary, not the original sound track.
