Penny Dreadful: Season One and Two
These are the first two seasons of Penny Dreadful. (The third final season hasn't been released as of this writing on DVD.) The title refers to the cheap, pulp, melodramatic and sensational publications of the Victoria era. The conceit of the series is to take famous characters from Victorian fiction and intertwine them in new stories. Much of the actions relate to a central female character, Vanessa Ives, and both the heavenly and more often satanic influences upon her. We meet such characters as Dracula, MIna, Lucy, and Renfield from Bram Stoker's Dracula. We meet Dorian Grey from Dorian Gray. We meet Victor Frankenstein and at least three of his creations from Frankenstein. We meet Dr. Henry Jekyll from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Although there's method to the madness, it's as though these and many other characters were tossed into the air and how they landed influenced numerous storylines. In short, this is a heavily Gothic and entertaining series that mashes together the 19th Century's most famous monsters.

best show... so sad it ended
i got into the show late. I was told by a friend to watch it... I went back and watched from season 1 and onto season 3 . only to have the show end!!! grr.. anways this show is so amazing! it talks about the classic horror figures we love. Frankenstein, vampires, monsters, werewolves, witches! it's so well written and the main character of Vanessa is brilliant!. the cd's come in the box set. but the season one season set, was damnged some how. it looks like may have been wet at some point, I did buy it new, still in the wrapping. but it seems as if water got in or something happen in handling . the disc all work fine throught! great price for the two seasons!

A dark dark view
This production holds absolutely nothing back. Nothing at all seems to be sacred, sexually or otherwise. The acting is superb. I would have been offended but, like the human being that I am, I found that I could not turn away. I had to see what happened next. And, this extreme darkness is laced with occasional philosophical insight, coming from, of all the possible sources, Frankenstein's Monster. There is, after all, a purposeful question here, if one can dig beneath the depictions of blood and evil in Victorian England. What is it really, to be human? Who or what are we?

Great for nostaligic horror buffs
I've loved how this show brings together the old horror movie characters and does such a great job with writing the show and enter twining the characters. I'm a vintage horror person so this has been right up my alley.

Beautiful Underbelly
The characters, the scenery, the engaging story all are grotesquely beautiful!! This show takes you to a place where you suspend disbelief and savor the imagery of Victorian England's underbelly, where lies monsters worthy of our worst nightmares, all while discovering those monsters may well include us.

A very different look to London's seamy side.
This series was a different look at the seamy side of the Victorian period in England. The cast was stellar (except Josh Hartnett) and the story was compelling. I really enjoyed Eva Green and Timothy Dalton's performances & there was something needed seriously in Josh Hartnett's role. I feel he just can't cut the mustard when it comes to major movie roles. He shouldn't have been casted.

Amazing show, great value dvd set.
Penny Dreadful is a must have for all fans of classic horror. Interwoven into a whole new story, are all the favorite horror characters...Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Grey, Frankenstien's "creature" and the mate that is created for him, Dracula, the Wolfman, and even Lucifer. A thrill a moment! Emmy worthy performances from Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carny, Billie Piper, and Rory Kinnear. Don't miss!

wasn't sure what to expect
I ordered this without any knowledge of what the series was about. Popped it in and I am hooked! If you love characters that keep you guessing, unexpected twists and turns in a story line and the morbid then this is just right. Just finished season 1 in one night. Love it!

Gothically entertaining
This was a quirky little series that didn't last long, but was entertaining to watch. Much of it was ghastly, gory and graphic so be aware that the word 'dreadful' in the title is quite spot on.
