An excellent review of the subject for non-academics by a leading author
This short book reviews many aspects of slavery in the British Empire in a clearly set out format. The layout is particularly clear and if you are interested in one topic the information is easy to find. I found the book very readable and learned a great deal. The book is factual rather than judgemental in style, but does cover many brutal aspects of the trade, slavery itself and slave revoltsThe book is aimed at the serious adult reader but is not an academic text, and puts readability ahead making use of extensive uses of references. The book only really deals with Africa and America (as indicated by the title) so folk interested in slavery and indentured labour in India won't find much to satisfy them here. The book is quite brief and, combined with the clear writing style, I found myself wanting more! The book has a few helpful maps, but is quite thin on numerical data which I found disappointing.
The economics of slavery is not dealt with extensively and I would recommend the author's more academic work "Slavery and the Atlantic Slave Trade in the British Economy" for that subject.
