SynopsisOsprey's new Weapon series provides a highly-detailed yet affordable overview of the development, use, and impact of small arms throughout history-from the sword to the machine gun. In this volume, Gordon Rottman examines this history of the longest serving weapon in the U.S. military's small arms inventory. Thoroughly researched and illustrated with rare photographs and original artwork by Johnny Shumate, the book takes readers from the origins of the "fifty" on the battlefields of World War I (1914-1918) to its use in the war on terror today. Rottman provides lists of the companies that manufactured the Browning and analyzes the variants that have arisen over the years since it first entered service in 1933. He also provides descriptions and photos of how it was used on aircraft, ships, riverboats, tanks, Humvees, and by ground forces. A cutaway illustration from Alan Gilliland details the parts of the weapon and a final chapter dispels myths told about it.

  • The Best Heavy Machine Gun ever

The Browning .50-Caliber Machine Guns title was one of the earliest and most popular in the Osprey Weapons series. Written by the prolific Gordon L. Rottman, it covers the development and service of one of the best machine guns ever designed. From its origins in the First World War to its perfection in the Second World War, the "Ma Duece" as it is affectionately known has compiled a record of success that few weapons can match. Designed originally to combat tanks, it became a potent anti-aircraft weapon both on the ground and in the air. Its powerful round was devastating against personal and soft skinned vehicles. It found use even as a sniper round for long range targets. The number of models of the 50 Caliber and mounting types is staggering. It is manufactured both in the US and by several foreign companies and is widely used to this day. Attempts to replace it with a lighter weapon have come to naught and it will probably soldier on well into the 21st. century. About the only drawback to this book is that the cutaway drawing of the machine gun features the earlier water cooled version rather than the more common air cooled version. Mr. Rottman does a fine job detailing this iconic weapon within the confines of the Osprey Weapon series format and the book should be part of any military historian's library.
