He saw combat at Kharkov and at the legendary Battle of Kursk. Overheard making a defeatist remark, he was sent to the notorious SS penal division Dirlewanger on the Oder Front, with which he survived the horror of the Halbe pocket.
Not that good. Having read vast amounts on eastern front this seems to contradict everything. A better book would be forgotten soldier by Guy Sajer who was conscripted from Alsace and gives a far better account of his time in the German army. The style of writing in this book is at time’s disjointed and you scratch your head trying to work out the relevance. It was a boring read if I am honest.
