Great for Double Feature Night At Home!
I get to finally see these movies with English subtitles! I truly enjoyed the story of the first film. This is where John Woo's signatures have begun as seen in his later films we all know today! The issue with this Anchorbay release in terms of the first movie is that there are a couple of AUDIO DROPOUTS especially at the beginning. Unacceptable. There are two white dots during the middle portion of the movie but they go away later. I found out through online searching it's not our DVD players but the DISC ITSELF. Thanks Anchorbay.... A Better Tomorrow II definitely has more action scenes. A bit overwhelming though with additional characters and you're sort of lost in the story. Still worth seeing. Audio and picture is fine. Great Dramatic Action Thriller
A Better Tomorrow - Three men a collision course that will shake their lives forever. Mark Lee (Chow Yun Fat) and Sung Tse-Ho (Ti Lung) are Triad members who specialize in printing and distributing fake bank notes. They are living like kings while Ho's younger brother Kit (Leslie Chung) is training to become a cop. Ho supports his younger brother and fights to keep his gangster lifestyle a secret from his family. Once Mark and Ho head to Taiwan for a "last deal", they are ambushed and suspected of ratting out the Triad who send a thug to silence Ho's father in case he is caught by police. In the fight, Kit manages to kill the thug but loses his father in the shuffle which forever changes his relationship with Ho. Ho is then sent to prison after surrendering and Mark manages to kill but ... A Better Tomorrow - Three men a collision course that will shake their lives forever. A Better Tomorrow II - The aftermath (Spoiler alert!!!!!) Mark is killed in the fight involving the Traids, Ho and his cop brother Kit. Kit allows Ho to kill the Triad leader and thus is given a pardon after a three year prison sentence if he agrees to go undercover and bust a new counterfeit operation. The head of this gang is Lung Sei (Dean Shek), Ho's former mentor and boss. Not long after he reunites with Lung things being to get incendiary as Kit, upon seeing his brother with Triads, suspects he has gone back to his old ways. Also the triads plan a trap for Lung and attack his family. Overcome with grief he is institutionalized. Meanwhile in America, Ken Gor (also played by Chow Yun Fat) twin brother of Mark Gor, is a restaurant owner who long ago went legit. He frees Lung and tries to nurse him back to health, but trouble soon finds its way to him and he has no choice but to help Ho and Kit close the book on the investigation. 5 Stars on both movies, true classics of HK cinema.
